The politician in question had left the UNP and joined Rajapaksa after the plot came to light following the arrest of the LTTE member by the then western province intelligence director Ravi Seneviratne, presently the senior DIG in charge of the CID.
Following his arrest, the Black Tiger had, on two occasions, tried to commit suicide, by swallowing a cyanide capsule and by injuring himself with a broken bottle.
The plot to assassinate Rajapaksa was exposed in detail by ‘Maragena Merena Koti’, (Suicide Tigers) a book written by ‘Lanka’ and ‘Irudina’ journalist Chaminda Senaratne in 2012.
The introduction for the book was by former Army chief Daya Ratnayake and the afterword by Maj. Gen. Prasanna Silva.
Samitha was quizzed over this plot
It was in connection with this matter that singer Samitha Erandathi Mudunkotuwa was recently summoned to the CID to record a statement.
According to Senaratne’s book, the Black Tiger who was sent on a mission to kill Rajapaksa is Balachandran alias Ismail, a resident of Palaiuttu in Trincomalee.
His father is Kandasamy and mother Lechchami.
Balachandran is the third in a family of four boys and two girls.
His eldest brother Kumaran and youngest sister were both members of the LTTE.
The brother died in a military attack in 1986, after which the outfit declared the Balachandrans as a Mahavira family.
He was educated at Trincomalee Tamil School, and did bio-science for his advanced levels.
Also having good Sinhala and English knowledge, Balachandran had joined the LTTE through its Trincomalee leader Kapil Amman.
In 2008, he was made a spy and disguised himself as a Muslim, after even having got circumcised.
Introduced to ex-UNP MP by TNA MP’s secretary
He was introduced to the ex-UNP MP by TNA MP Jeyanandamurthi’s secretary at Hotel Oasis at Maliban Street, Colombo Pettah on or around 28 February 2009.
The former MP was told to spy on the then president Rajapaksa when he visited no. 14 at Gregory Road, Colombo, which he visited frequently.
For that, he accepted nearly Rs. 10 million on or around 16 July 2009, through a leading LTTE member in Malaysia.
The ex-UNP MP had taken Balachandran, disguised as a Muslim and appearing at Ismail, to his Colombo home.
The Black Tiger had spent two days there and used the politician’s luxury car to go to the Gregory Road to spy on Rajapaksa.
