As the torch was being taken through Matara town yesterday (31), an Education Ministry secretary Sunil Jayaweera has mediated and got it taken to Uyanwatte stadium.
At the time, the 25th school netball tournament was taking place at the grounds.
Jayaweera, who had reportedly been under the influence of liquor, had insisted parents of the participating netballers to join in the torch’s journey.
When a mother of the Ladies College objected, an aide to Jayaweera has threatened her, while several other aides have assaulted the father of another, say reports.
Meanwhile, nine Sri Lankan athletes are taking part in the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Olympics from 05 to 21 of August.
But, accompanying them are around 40 trainers, coaches, National Olympic Committee and other Sports Minstry named officials and journalists.
However, there is no doctor among them.
