Accordingly the gazette notification in this regard was signed by Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.
According to the 32nd article of the Food Act number 36 of 1980, soft drink bottles with a sugar concentration level of above 11 grams must contain a red label, whilst soft drinks with an average sugar content between 2-11 grams should carry a yellow label.
The gazette notification also includes drinks with a sugar concentration of less than two grams that is required to contain a green label.
According to the Ministry of Health discussions were held with owners of soft drinks factories 6 months ago.
Director General of Health Services Dr. Palitha Maheepala said the gazette notification was issued with the intention of preventing diseases such as diabetes and to avoid dental health issues.
The decision was reached after taking into consideration the high sugar concentration levels in local and imported soft drinks.
