Nearly 300,000 youths who are eligible to exercise their franchise have not been registered as voters, says elections commission chief Mahinda Deshapriya.

They belong to the 18 to 35 year age group and are scattered across the country, according to him.

Deshapriya says he hopes to introduce laws to punish those who intentionally fail to register as voters.

Meanwhile, reports reaching Sri Lanka Mirror say the elections commission and an international foundation for election systems will get together to launch a seven-day social media campaign to get these youths to register as voters.
