Separate court to hear bribery, corruption cases

Separate court to hear bribery, corruption cases Featured

The government is planning to set up a separate high court to expedite hearing cases against politicians and others who had committed fraud, corruption and swindling of public money during the previous regime, ‘Ravaya’ reports.

It will be an addition to the Colombo high court system under the prevailing laws.

Similar courts have already been established, for instance the two high courts in Colombo an Anuradhapura under the PTA.

Also, another court functions at the Welikada prison premises to hear cases against drug suspects who are facing death threats.

The requirement will only be the appointment of a judge and the allocation of a courtroom.

Such a court will be able to speedily hear cases at a rate of at least three cases a day.

The moves comes as the government is under heavy public criticism for not fulfilling its election promise of punishing those guilty of corruption, fraud and swindling of public money during the Rajapaksa rule.
