The general secretary of the party cannot take decisions of his own, he says.
Aluthgamage is responding to an announcement by UNP and SLFP general secretaries Kabir Hashim and Duminda Dissanayake respectively at a media briefing on July 21 that the coalition pact would be extended up to five years.
If the SLFP remains that long in the government, it will have to contest elections on the UNP ticket, Aluthgamage says.
Meanwhile, several key figures of the UNP have urged prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to take a firm decision by the end of the year if the SLFP continues to disrupt his diplomatic efforts, in a cold war between the two main partners of the government.
They have urged the PM to choose either to sit in the opposition or to form a government of the UNP, say party sources.
