58 more fraud probes on Rajapaksas

The Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) and the Special Police Investigations Unit (SPIU) are investigating 58 allegations against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family members.

This was revealed during a meeting held among the respective investigations units and President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Several government ministers also attended the meeting where progress over the investigations being carried out by the FCID, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and SPIU was discussed. The FCID had said that it was investigating 493 incidents, CID 15 and SPIU 5, sources said. Meanwhile a new Bill is to be submitted in Parliament to combine the FCID and the Bribery and Corruption Commission. The government feels combining the FCID and the Bribery Commission will help streamline the operations of both institutions.
