SLMC rebels form new party

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is on the verge of a split following divisions over the party leadership.

The SLMC rebels have formed a group under the name ‘Eastern Uprising’ to work against SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem.

Former Minister Segu Issadeen said that the new political front will look to register soon as a new political party serving Muslim interests.

He said that several SLMC members who oppose the actions of Hakeem have shown interest to be part of the new political party.

Issadeen accused the SLMC leader of using the party for his personal interests and failing to address issues faced by the Muslims, particularly in the Eastern Province.
