The CPSL MP was speaking at a politburo meeting on July 22 to discuss the party’s decision whether to support the march by Mahinda Rajapaksa loyalists against constitutional reforms, say political sources.
General secretary Dew Gunasekara adopted a moderate approach, explaining both pros and cons from the CPSL’s participation in the march.
However, chairman Raja Collure, deputy secretary S. Sudasinghe and politburo member L.R. Shelton insisted they should attend the event.
However, Gajadheera maintained the party, which wants the constitution to be amended, noted they should not oppose a document yet to be announced.
Dr. Weerasinghe, V.A. Jayantha, A.G. Jayaseka all supported Gajadheera’s stance that the CPSL should not promote Rajapaksa’s racism.
Gajadheera vehemently criticized Gamini Lokuge, who first wants the reforms adopted by parliament, but after which should be opposed at a referendum.
In the end, the CPSL decided not to support the ‘Pada Yatra’, and will issue a media statement to make the announcement within the next two days, Lankadeepa reports.
