Paddy certified as being not suitable for human consumption and released by the Paddy Marketing Board as animal feed is returning to the market in bulk in a racket aided by a minister from Anuradhapura, information has come to light.

It is the same racketeers who had carried out this scam during the Rajapaksa regime along with a then minister from Kurunegala.

This racket has led to massive losses by the state and even the cabinet has been misled by those involved.

The state buys paddy at Rs. 34 per kilo from farmers.

Even though they are fit for human consumption, cabinet has been told it was not so and the lots sold to selected institutions at prices of around Rs. 24 per kilo as animal feed.

Puttalam rice traders association has caught red handed one officer involved in this scam on May 01 while in the act of selling paddy, obtained at Rs. 24, at Rs. 29 a kilo as animal feed.
