According to commissioner general of Buddhist affairs Nimal Kotawalagedara, most of these monks belong to the 18 to 20 year age category.

The department is to inquire into the reasons behind their leaving the priesthood, under which opinions of senior clergy is to be obtained.

According to a 2016 census, Sri Lanka has 37,691 registered Buddhist monks.
