Top policemen investigated over cover-up of Lasantha murder probe

The police headquarters has opened an investigation into its top officials who had covered up the probe into the killing of journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga.

These officials had served in the TID during the previous regime, reports say.

Of them, TID director retired DIG C.N. Wagista was summoned to the CID on July 07.

Investigations have revealed that the TID had granted police bail to 17 Army men, including Piyawansa, who had been arrested in connection with the ‘The Sunday Leader’ editor’s murder.

They had been released on the pretext of a lack of evidence against them.

However, police headquarters sources say among them were those who were directly linked to the killing.

They are to be questioned against very soon.

The sources also say vital information has come to light about the gunning down of Wickramatunga at Attidiya in January 2009.
