CB governor appointment likely to be delayed! Featured

The term of Central Bank governor Arjun Mahendran ended yesterday (29), but giving him an extension or appointing another person to the position is likely to be delayed by several days, say sources at the president’s office.

President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to appoint a public official as the CB governor, but prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has insisted Mahendran should be reappointed, or else, Charita Ratwatte be given the position.

The president and the PM held a meeting to discuss the matter at the CB headquarters yesterday, and they were joined over the phone by ministers Ravi Karunanayake and Malik Samarawickrama, who are in presently in China.

However, no agreement has been reached.

AG’s report submitted

Meanwhile, auditor general Gamini Wijesinghe has submitted his report into accusations against Mahendran to COPE and also refered it to the finance board as per tradition.

COPE chairman Sunil Handunnetti said he has no powers to reveal the content, and that the report has been handed over to the speaker.

However, a member of the committee told Sri Lanka Mirror that report claims that an irregularity had taken place in the CB bond issues.
