Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is due to make a special statement with regard to the term of Central Bank governor Arjun Mahendran.

The statement will make several revelations and stress that Mahendran is not at fault, a senior government minister told Sri Lanka Mirror.

The PM has noted to ministers recently that if not for Mahendran, the country would not have received loans from the IMF, India, World Bank, ADB and Dubai-Sri Lanka development bonds among others to keep the economy even at this level.

A report that is to be submitted to COPE by the auditor general with regard to the bond issue allegations will decide Mahendran’s future at the CB, say political sources.

This is pursuant to a meeting of the president, PM and other top government figures, where Wickremesinghe said firmly that Mahendran had done nothing wrong.

Mahendran, whose tenure ends on June 30, has decided not to accept an extension until COPE clears him of the allegations.
