Govt. refutes cluster bomb claims Featured

The government has refuted claims that cluster bombs had been used during the war, and noted such allegations have become the norm at the commencement of UNHRC sessions in Geneva.

Making the claim, Britain’s ‘The Guardian’ said there was photographic evidence to show the government used cluster bombs to attack the no fire zone during the final stages of the war.

Demining teams found exploded and unexploded cluster bombs at Salai and Sundikulam in the north, the newspaper said in its June 20 issue.

Responding, cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne told the media today (22) that the first thing that should be ascertained as to whether those photographs had actually been taken in Sri Lanka.

Also, who can tell for certain if these bombs were used by the armed forces or the LTTE, he asked.

Deputy minister Karunaratne Paranawithana said the Sri Lankan armed forces had not used cluster bombs, and if demining teams had found such bombs, they should have informed the government.
