Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshappriya has declared that in accordance with laid down procedure, President Mahinda Rajapaksa cannot remain in office for another two years to complete his term if he loses the election on January 8.

Deshappriya was responding to questions raised about various declarations made by interested parties that the President can go on for another two years if he loses after January 8.
Deshappriya said it was in accordance with the Constitution when it comes to electing and rejecting Presidents at an election.

"The office of the elected President becomes effective from the day the election result is announced. In the same way the candidate who is elected as the President has to take his oaths within two weeks of being elected", said Deshappriya.
