Writ of quo warranto sought against Mahendran Featured

CaFFE executive director Keerthi Tennakoon filed a petition in the court of appeal today (20) seeking a writ of quo warranto against Arjun Mahendran’s holding office as the Central Bank governor.

The petition says Mahendran is not a Sri Lankan citizen, and his appointment as the CB governor is not legal.

It says there are serious allegations of corruption against him in the two issuance of CB bonds, and also that he has abused power.

Meanwhile, minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told the media at Sirikotha that an inquiry was underway in relation to the CB governor.

He will not be removed at the insistence of the joint opposition, said Kariyawasam.

The government will not permit an accused to be absolved without an inquiry or allow the joint opposition to use this matter to weaken the government, he said.

He noted the assurance given by prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that Mahendran would not be appointed to the position until the completion of the investigation against him.
