PM's agreement not to extend Mahendran’s term confirmed

Sri Lanka Mirror’s revelation yesterday (19) morning that prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed not to extend the term of Central Bank governor Arjun Mahendran pending the completion of investigations into accusations against him has been confirmed by ‘Citizen’s Power’ activist Gamini Viyangoda to BBC Sandeshaya.

Activists of Citizen’s Power and the National Movement for a Just Society met the PM Saturday night and asked him to remove Mahendran from the position temporarily, said Viyangoda.

If he is cleared, he can be reappointed, or else, another person should be appointed, he said.

It will not be good governance if a decision is not taken regarding the CB governor without considering the accusations against him over the CB bond issues, he added.

Both the president and the PM have come to understand the seriousness of the issue and the possible damaging results to the government, according to Viyangoda.
