UNP MP swindles harvest of coconut plantation

UNP MP swindles harvest of coconut plantation Featured

The harvest of the coconut plantation owned by Chilaw Plantation Company had been swindled by former top managers of the company and a government politician of the area, it is alleged.

Belonging to the treasury, this rich coconut plantation is managed by the state enterprise ministry.

It has 22,000 coconut trees, but past records claim only 2,000 had borne fruit, at the rate of just one bunch per tree.

The government appointed a new management, with M.R.V.R. Meepura as the director, in order to stop this swindling.

As he was at work on June 02, UNP MP Shantha Abeysekara has telephoned him, warning him against his visiting the coconut plantation and threatening to break his limbs if he went there.

The director and the management have lodged a complaint with Colombo Fort police and informed the finance minister and top government authorities about the conduct of the UNP MP.

There are allegations that Abeysekara and the former management had swindled the harvest.
