Residents close to the Salawa Army camp in Kosgama have been evacuated to safer locations following an explosion and an resultant fire at the ammunition storage of the camp, Army commander Lt. Gen. Krishantha de Silva said.
Their homes are being given protection by the armed forces.
The Air Force has sent a surveillance flight to the affected area.
Firefighters are taking steps to put out the blaze which is gradually subsiding.
Meanwhile, all state institutions and schools in Avissawella will remain closed tomorrow in view of the situation.
