CID ASP given illegal promotion

CID ASP given illegal promotion

An Assistant Police Superintendent (ASP) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has been illegally promoted to the rank of SP despite the fact that a fundamental rights violation petition is currently being heard at the Supreme Court.

The FR petition is currently being heard at the Supreme Court under SC/FR 81/2011. The petition has been filed regarding an unlawful arrest of a person in 2011 under false accusations. According to the law, no police officer can be granted any promotion when an FR case is being heard against him. Hence a group of ASPs have planned to file their own FR petition against this issue claiming that the responsible officers including the IGP must be brought to justice.

The police officer who was given the promotion recently drew publicity over his involvement in various investigations including the disappearance of journalist Pregeeth Eknaligoda.
