Opposition leader has no official residence

Opposition leader has no official residence Featured

Opposition leader R. Sampanthan is yet to be given an official residence, although the president, the prime minister, the speaker, the commanders of the armed forces and the IGP all have official residences.

At present, Sampanthan is staying at the upper floor block of a housing complex that has seen no repairs for some time.

To gain entrance to his residence, he has to climb a flight of 28 stairs, and the bedrooms are located in an even upper floor.

Another matter is Sampanthan is over 80 years of age, and it is quite a tiring task for him to climb up and down in that manner to and from his residence.

When a ‘Divaina’ journalist went to the place recently to interview him, he saw how the opposition leader was climbing up the stairs with the support of his bodyguards, taking a long time in the process.

Relevant authorities should immediately look into this.
