The director general of customs has angered trade unions by releasing 100-containerloads of arecanut illegally-imported for re-exportation, by imposing a lesser fine of Rs. 100,000 per container.

On an order by a top government minister, director general of the commerce and investment policy department K.D.N. Ranjith Asoka has written to the customs chief to release the arecanuts imported by Agricom Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. from Indonesia.

Customs TUs are questioning the grounds for imposing a Rs. 100,000 fine per container, when a Rs. 500,000 fine was imposed on an earlier occasion.
