Every Sri Lankan produces garbage weighing between 600 to 850 grams a day, a latest survey reveals.

Carried out by the megapolis and western development ministry together with the CEA, it shows a resident of Colombo municipality area produces 850 grams of garbage each day.

In other municipality areas, the figure is 750 grams, while people living in other areas dump 600 grams per person.

Accordingly, 6,400 tons of garbage is collected in urban areas, 60 per cent of the amount in the western province.

However, only 20.4 pc of the garbage is collected, while 44.7 pc is either burnt or buried, while 27.7 pc remains piled up.

Also, 5.27 pc is used for producing compost, the survey shows.
