Abeywardena married Nayomi Aluthgamage who is a niece of the minister on October 30 this year. She is a flight stewardess.
Abeywardena was an old boy of Royal College in Colombo and hailed from Kurunegala.
Squadron Leader Wasantha Abeywardena, the pilot of the ill-fated Russian made Antonov 32 aircraft which crashed in Athurugiriya this morning was a relation of sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.
