The allegation was made at a meeting of the Matale district agriculture committee yesterday (26), chaired by state minister Wasantha Aluvihare.
Forest range officer W.M.M.K. Wasala told the gathering that Minneriya-Giritale reserve too, was being blocked out, and licenses have already been given to 40 blocks by the divisional secretariat.
Some of these blocks are being cultivated and agrarian service officers have even charged taxes in lieu of them, said the officer.
Minister Aluvihare said the Grama Seva officer of the area was responsible, and instructed divisional secretary Neil de Alwis to immediately investigate the matter.
