Accordingly, several provincial councillors affiliated to the President are to be appointed as Provincial Council ministers instead.

According to sources, these measures follow calls by SLFP members of lower levels to provide positions to those who are working for the SLFP to strengthen the party.

Also, it has been decided to immediately commence restructuring activities of the SLFP and party General secretary - Duminda Dissanayake has already called for interviews to appoint new electorate organisers.

The President had recently stated that Provincial Council elections will be held next March and the SLFP has already commenced preparations in grassroot levels, reports add.

Cold War over

Meanwhile, political sources say that the prevailing cold war between the President and his predecessor - Mahinda Rajapaksa is to become 'an open battle' after the May Day celebrations.

This is due to the Rajapaksas deciding to commence a separate political journey starting from the May Rally of the joint opposition in Kirulapone. Former minister Basil Rajapaksa is in charge of organising the rally.
