Leader of the 'Pivithuru Hela Urumaya' - MP Udaya Gammanpila says that appointing Pujith Jayasundara as the next IGP despite the existence of far more senior officers such as S.M. Wickremasinghe is illegal.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo today (19) he said that that the public's faith of the Constitutional Council (CC) has collapsed due to this factor.

The MP charged that minister Champika Ranawaka too had been present when the CC recommended Jayasundara for the top chair of the Police Department.

Accordingly, Ranawaka has 'extended his gratitude' to Jayasundara who would return the favour, said Gammanpila adding that the investigations probing the charges leveled against Ranawaka would be swept under the rug now.
