Suspect arrested over Chavakachcheri explosives haul Featured

A mother in Chavakachcheri says that her son was taken away by a group in white van with regard to the suicide bomb kit found in the region, 'BBC Sandeshaya' reports.

Speaking, the mother - Sundaram Devi said that the group in civvies had arrived at their house and questioned her son for around 1/2 an hour before taking him away handcuffed.

She has complained to the Human Rights Council on Friday that her son is being detained at the TID unit in Vavuniya.

Sundaram Devi has further said that she had gone to the TID to see her son, only to be told by officers to go to the Boossa camp on Sunday to see him.

The 'BBC Sandeshaya' further cites a TID official as to saying that this individual was arrested as a suspect with regard to the haul of explosives found in the Chavakachcheri area recently and that they cannot comment on the case further.

National security

Following the discovery of the explosives, individuals in the opposition had stated that it was a threat to national security.

In response, Defense secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi had said that it was a normal situation to find hidden and abandoned explosives as well as arms from regions where the war prevailed and that there is no threat posed to national security.
