“Till it happens to You”

“Till it happens to You” Featured

Lady Gaga’s music videos often have a viewer’s discretion advised warning, but her latest video was different. In her latest song, “Till It Happens To You”, Gaga addresses the issue of rape and sexual violence on college campuses.

The music video portrays three common types of assault that happen to college women. They are: being assaulted by someone you know, being assaulted for your sexual orientation and being drugged and assaulted at a party.

The video included harsh facts of sexual assault on college campuses, like the fact that one out of five female college students are sexually assaulted a year.

Gaga addresses that until you have experienced that violation you don’t understand it, that we have no right to tell a victim of sexual assault how they should feel or react. She helps give a voice to the thousands of women who are assaulted every year on campuses across America.

About 20 percent of college women and 6 percent of college men will experience completed or attempted sexual assault during their college career, according to 1is2many.okstate.edu. Gaga’s video brings the necessary attention to sexual violence that occurs on college campuses. Often we sweep this issue under the rug because it brings negative publicity to the university that it occurs on.

Often victims confide in a friend and not to family or the school. By making this video, Lady Gaga encourages victims of rape to report the assault. Campuses everyehere should be teaching that sexual violence is a violation of someone’s rights. Someone’s body is not someone else’s to use as an object. Rape and sexual assault is an issue we should all be aware of in order to stop it from occurring and to be able to support the victims when it does occur.
