Reload backfires for Telecom companies

Reload backfires for Telecom companies Featured

Telecom companies are feeling the pinch just like their subscribers have done before following a 25 percent tax that mobile phone service providers are to pay the government in the aftermath of the Interim Budget.

Telecom big wigs are already scrambling for a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena to spell out their grievances.

The tax was earlier paid by customers who subscribe to these Telecom companies.

The telecom companies called Etisalat, Air Tel, Mobitel, Dialog and Hutch say they are at the receiving end of the tax on prepaid reloads.

These companies earned 40 percent of their income through prepaid reloads.

Collectively they will have to pay Rs.250 million in taxes annually from their earnings.
