Wheels Lanka evaded Rs. 50 million tax

Wheels Lanka evaded Rs. 50 million tax Featured

Incumbent Inland Revenue Department commissioner general Kalyani Dassanayake and another official have allegedly plotted to prevent the state from getting Rs. 50 million of tax revenue due from Wheels Lanka company three years ago.

They have covered up an evaluation notice that was to be issued against the company, according to reports reaching Sri Lanka Mirror.

Wheels Lanka has the tax file no. TIN – 114146889 of 6A division, to which major taxpayers belong.

The fraud had taken place when Dassanayake was a senior commissioner in the major taxpayers division in 2013, and the other officer involved is another commissioner D.M.L. Ivan Dissanayake.

The go-between for the shady deal was Ivan Vidanapathirana alias Sudu Ivan, a close friend of Ivan Dissanayake, according to a complaint lodged.

The complaint was lodged on 07 February 2013 by former vice president of Inland Revenue staff officers union K.G.J.N. Deshapriya with the then Inland Revenue chief.

His written complaint alleges Sudu Ivan had influenced the valuer and the deputy commissioner with regard to the Wheels Lanka file.

Since they refused to give in, he had got Kalyani Dissanayake and Ivan Dissanayake to prevent the evaluation notice against the company from being issued.

Top officials of the department say this fraud is of the same scale as those of the VAT fraud and the Rs. 75 million Golden Key fraud.
