Woman calls off wedding due to dowry demand

Woman calls off wedding due to dowry demand Featured

Taking a stand against the practice of dowry, Kerala woman Remya Ramachandran's Facebook post calling off her wedding due to dowry demands has gone viral.

In a society where instances of dowry are still reported in spite of it being prohibited under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1962, Remya's bold move appealed to a lot of people.

In her Facebook post, she has mentioned that she decided to break the alliance because the groom was demanding money and gold.

Her post in Malyalam can be translated as:

"Dear friends,

This message is for all those who are inquiring with me about my wedding date. The family who earlier told me that they only wanted me, have now asked for 50 'tola' of gold plus Rs 5 lakhs. I am against the practice of streedhan (dowry). I believe buying a man and a family who cannot stand by their words for such a huge amount would have been a loss. Hence i am calling off this wedding.

Thanks."

In another post, three days later, she later thanked the people who supported her and stood by her:
