No owner for Diyagama stadium Featured

The Mahinda Rajapaksa stadium in Diyagama is without an owner, says sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekara.

The Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha is the owner of the land in which the stadium is located, previously owned by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

The Stadium was built by the Army with a Rs. 65 million funding given by the Sports Ministry, said Jayasekara.

He said he would attempt to take over the stadium.

There is no information as to the total cost of the stadium project and how the funds were spent.

The total cost is said to be Rs. 4,280 million.

Meanwhile, Jayasekara told parliament yesterday that the Suriyawewa Stadium has hosted 11 T-20 matches only since it was built on 20 February 2012.

A Rs. 4,283 million loan was obtained from the Bank of Ceylon to build the stadium, and the construction was done by the Ports Authority, he said.

The minister was responding to a question raised by MP Ashu Marasinghe in parliament yesterday (23).
