Corrupt cannot hold cricket positions – minister Featured

Sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekara says that if anyone elected at the Sri Lanka Cricket elections in January is proven to be corrupt, such persons will be removed from office.

The key candidates at the election are former presidents Jayantha Dharmadasa, Arjuna Ranatunga and Thilanga Sumathipala and former secretary Nishantha Ranatunga.

Ex-president Upali Dharmadasa is supporting the Ranatunga brothers, although Arjuna had been levelling serious corruption allegations against the administration of Upali and Nishantha.

The director general of sports says several complaints have been received against the candidates, and that these will be investigated today (10).

The sports minister says some of the nominations could be rejected due to technical reasons.

Conflict of interests

An investigation board is the view that there are serious allegations of conflict of interests against Nishantha and Upali and Jayantha Dharmadasa brothers.

Especially, when Nishantha was the SLC secretary, he had also been the CEO of CSN channel, which had been given broadcasting rights.

The COPE too, has strongly criticized that.

Jayasekara says the committee appointed by his predecessor Navin Dissanayake has not ruled them guilty.

The SLC has been ordered to investigate the allegations, with advice obtained from the attorney general.

Meanwhile, the Thilanga Sumathipala led administration was dissolved by the then sports minister Jeevan Kumaratunga over serious allegations of corruption.

Jayasekara said he was not aware as to whether those allegations had been investigated.

When contacted, a spokesman for the ICC declined to comment about allegations against the SLC candidates. BBC Sandeshaya reports.
