Sports values doomed in Lanka

The Sports Development Department has felicitated the Sri Lankans who excelled at the Commonwealth junior games in Samoa, but manager of the national contingent Anoma Ratnayake had not been invited for the occasion, according to reports reaching Sri Lanka Mirror.

Ratnayake told 'Sri Lanka Mirror' that she was not worried about not being invited.

Of the eight member Sri Lankan team, six won medals.

The two who failed to win too, did not receive invitations for the felicitation.

Ratnayake noted that such step-motherly treatment would discourage the young sports personnel.

Sri Lankan marathon runner Ranatunga Karunananda who participated in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics failed to win, but the Grade Five school textbook in Japan devotes the first lesson to him, she said.

Family administration

Ratnayake had not been invited for the felicitation, as she has complained to the National Olympic Committee about a coach whose family has a big influence on the Sports Development Department and on the weightlifting sport, according to reports reaching SLM.
