Jonathan Trott announced his retirement

England batsman Jonathan Trott has announced retirement from international cricket.

The 34-year-old South Africa-born batsman, who had pulled out of 2013’s Ashes tour of Australia after first Test because of stress-related problems, returned to Test squad after 18 months in the recently-concluded tour of West Indies but made just 72 in six innings of three Tests.

Thrice he was dismissed for duck during the Caribbean tour.

“This was a tough decision but I don’t feel my game is at the level needed to play for England,” Trott said.

“I was honoured to come back and play international cricket again and I’m disappointed it didn’t work out.”

Trott scored 3,835 runs in 52 Tests at the average of 44.08 with nine centuries and 15 half-centuries.

The Warwickshire made his Test debut against Australia during 2009 Ashes series and struck a match-winning hundred in that match.

He was the part of team that defeated Australia on their own backyard after 21 years in 2011 and saw England climb to top of ICC Test rankings for the first time.

Earlier the same year, he was also named ICC Player of the Year.

“I’ve had incredible highs and some real lows in an England shirt but wouldn’t change a thing,” said Trott.

In 2013-14, Trott had left Ashes series in Australia citing stress-related issues following England’s defeat in the first Test.

He made comeback to England Test squad during recent Caribbean tour, but with a new role of opener, rather than no.3 batsman.

He scored 59 in in the first innings of second Test but managed only 13 runs in five other innings.

Trott also represented the England in 68 ODIs, scoring 2819 runs at 51.25 with four centuries and seven Twenty20 internationals, scoring 138 runs at 23.00 with highest score of 51.

Trott said he will continue to play county cricket.

“I look forward to continuing my career at Warwickshire and hopefully helping us win more silverware.”
