Initially, he did defeat American Samoan judoka Benjamin Waterhouse, qualifying for the round of 16.

During Round of 16, he was defeated by Georgian judoka and London Olympics gold medallist - Lasha Shavdatuashvili.

Chamara is the first Sri Lankan judoka competing at the Olympics.
