Cricket in Sri Lanka in peril

Cricket in Sri Lanka in peril Featured

The cricket in Sri Lanka is in peril due to a serious division of top officials in Sri Lanka Cricket which is also without plans for the future, critics say.

The SLC is now factionalized as those supporting president Thilanga Sumathipala as against deputy presidents Jayantha Dharmadasa and K. Mathivanan.

Both Jayantha and Mathivanan are disappointed that their views had no place in the institution and they could leave their positions within days, say SLC sources.

Sumathipala became the cricket chief with their support, but they are now in opposing camps.

Meanwhile, a policy decision not to send selectors for foreign tours has once again been violated.

Chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya went to England twice during the ongoing series.

He went there by business class.

Also, selector Romesh Kaluwitharana has been told to join the ‘A’ team in their England tour.

He has applied for visa, but is likely to get it only in time for the final match of the series, reports say.

Meanwhile, Vanessa Bowan, Indrani Ariyaratne, Padma Karunaratne and Apsari Tilakaratne have been recruited to SLC, purportedly to uplift women’s cricket.

None of them have an understanding about their responsibilities.

It is a well-known secret that Indrani has been given the position in return for having voted for the present administration in violation of a decision by her club.
