Accordingly, the leadership council, deputy leader, assistant leader and the national leader, appointed during the the period the UNP had its leadership crisis, will be annulled, and instead of the national leader position, Ranil Wickremesinghe will return to the position of party leader, said the sources.

Also, Wickremesinghe will gain more powers as per the previous party constitutions.

There will be no changes to the persons holding the chairman, general secretary and treasurer positions.

Meanwhile, the UNP plans to prepare second and third tier leaderships for the party and handover more responsibilities to the young activists.

Accordingly, the party leadership has decided to entrust Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Harin Fernando, Ruwan Wijewardena, Sujeewa Senasinghe, Harsha de Silva and Ajith P. Perera with special tasks.

A decision has already been taken to give responsibilities of the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya to Kariyawasam, the sources added.
