Six including former UNP member of the Ambalanthota Pradeshiya Sabha - K.M. Amila Prasanna were rounded by villagers of Arachchikattuwa on the night of March 31 while attempting a vehicle theft in the area.
They had been handed over to the police.
It is said that a doctor at the Embilipitiya-Chandrika Wewa district hospital and an officer at the Hambantota District secretariat are also involved.
Police have also found two forged numberplates in the van the group had travelled in.
