Explosives found in Chavakachcheri not a threat

A suicide vest and other explosives were discovered by police from a house that comes under the jurisdiction of the Chavakachcheri Police in Jaffna.

A statement by the Police Media Spokesperson reads that three parcels containing TNT explosives, 100 9mm bullets and 04 side chargers were discovered. In addition, two battery packs used to detonate side chargers were also discovered.

The statement by the police media spokesperson notes that the owner of the house has fled the area, following the discovery, and investigations are currently underway to apprehend him. Police suspect that the seized weapons may have been hidden during the war.

Secretary of Defence Karunasena Hettiarachchi, commenting on the discovery, at a media briefing on Thursday, explained that there is a clear difference between national security and the discovery certain material from a certain place.

The Secretary of Defence added that material that were left unattended during the conflict are still being discovered, and discovery of bombs, guns and other weapons are reported daily, according to reports.

“If one is saying that such a discovery poses a threat to national security, then one must need to consider the level of intelligence of that person”, charged the defence secretary.
