John says Champika’s permission obtained for demolition Featured

Permission was obtained from minister Patali Champika Ranawaka to demolish part of the walking track and plaque at Black Canal at Mabola, Wattala, says minister John Amaratunga.

Amaratunga says the demolition of the walking track was for the construction of 200 houses on a nearby block of land.

Media director of Ranawaka’s megapolis and western development ministry Dhanushka Ramanayake has told the media the walking track would be renovated within the next few months once the broadening of the road was completed.

It was contractor’s fault that he had not informed the public about this, said Ramanayake.

However, it has come to light that the land on which the walking track is located is a private property.

Joggers saw last morning (27) that the brick on the walking track, the plaque, lamp posts and other constructions removed on the previous night secretly.

When contacted, Wattala police said they were unaware of such an incident.

However, people are surprised to find several policemen deployed at the location after the demolition work.

The UDA built the walking track during the previous regime and the Wattala urban council handed over the task of maintaining it.
