Ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa vehemently opposed either Gotabhaya or Chamal being fielded as the UPFA prime ministerial candidate, despite president Maithripala Sirisena agreeing to the proposal, according to minister S.B. Dissanayake.

While addressing a function in Pallethalawinna yesterday (27), Dissanayake responded to a question raised by a journalist as to whether the SLFP was going to appoint Gotabhaya as an MP.

Meanwhile, the former defence secretary told journalists after a function at Thelijjawila in Matara yesterday that a person should become an MP through the vote only.

He was responding to a question with regard to reports that he has been proposed to be appointed an MP on the UPFA ticket.
