Electric cars remain uncleared due to high tax Featured

Vehicle importers are unable to get clearance for between 50 and 100 electric cars at Colombo port owing to the significant increase in customs duty.

The maiden budget of the present government raised the tax to 50 per cent, from the previous five pc.

For example, the Rs. 200,000 customs duty for a Nissan vehicle has been increased to Rs. 2.6 million, noted Innovation Shipping Lines manager Mahesh Vidyaratne to BBC Sandeshaya.

Following calls, the government gave a concession to vehicles imported for private purposes, but did not extend it to vehicle traders.

Vidyaratne said despite representations by the vehicle importers association, the government has not yet given a favourable response.

Attempts to contact finance minister Ravi Karunanayake to inquire as to why no concession is given for these environmentally-friendly vehicles, were unsuccessful.
