Parent demands Rs. 260 m from Royal College principal Featured

Principal of Royal College Upali Gunasekera has received a letter of demand to the tune of Rs. 260 million from a parent following a swimming pool tragedy inflicted on her son last year during a scout camp held at the school premises.
In her letter of demand PB Geetha Chandani, the mother of 15-year old Sasanka Alwis, has stated that her son is in a "permanent vegetable state" following the incident which left the boy with permanent brain injuries since March 2, 2013.
The letter sent through her Attorney at Law Vishwa de Livera Tennekoon has demanded the money be paid within two weeks from December 3 this year.

The boy's father passed away in 1999 on the day he was born.

The mother of the boy has stated that the school principal had failed to ensure adequate life-saving facilities, equipment or personnel to provide safety for the swimmers thereby showing callous disregard to the safety of students which amounted to a gross act of negligence.

She has stated that there had been no first aid or emergency services or a vehicle at the scout camp to take her son to hospital after he ended up in a critical state.

Geetha Chandani has also stated that her son has remained unconscious and in a permanent vegetable state since the incident and is being sustained through liquids delivered through tubes inserted into him.

The letter of demand also states that the victim student Sasanka has lost all his amenities of life which has further diminished and will need permanent medical assistance throughout his life.
