One phase of Norochcholai power plant has been shut down following an explosion at the grid substation at Kotugoda, Ja Ela.

Power ministry secretary Sulakshana Jayawardena said the generation of electricity at the two other phases has been restricted as well.

These have been taken as safety measures, he said.

Following a fire, a transformer exploded at the Kotugoda substation, to which
Air Force protection has been provided.

The cause is unknown.

Repairing of the transformer is underway, while the government analyst is to visit the location for an investigation.

Due to the incident, power supply to adjoining areas has been suspended.

This is similar to the explosion at the Biyagama electricity station, said Jayawardena.
