The move has been mooted by the new chief minister of Tamil Nadu O. Paneerselvam.
He is also reported to have shown his appreciation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to get fishermen from Tamil Nadu held in Sri Lanka released.
Five Indian fishermen nabbed by the Sri Lanka navy in November 2011for transporting drugs were sentenced to death recently in the island.
They were pardoned by President Mahinda Rajapaksa last month.
While chief minister Paneerselvam's proposal to wrest control of Kachativu was unanimously passed in Tamil Nadu, the committee had also discussed ways of freeing several more fishermen held in Sri Lanka jails on charges of illegal fishing.
