The Army commander has ordered a ban on the sale of cigarettes and alcohol at Army welfare shops, officers’ quarters and restaurants on all Wednesdays and Fridays.

As per the national drive against alcohol launched on the instructions of president Maithripala Sirisena, this has become effective on 01 February.

The Army chief has also declared Wednesday a day of training for all personnel, and the ban will prevent personnel from smoking during training and consuming alcohol after training.

Alcohol parties on Friday evenings have also been prohibited at Army camps.

When he was the commander, Gen. Rohan Daluwatte, a follower of Sai Baba, had banned beef consumption among Army personnel.
