Fifteen and 20 out of every 100 Sri Lankans respectively suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure, says the Family Health Bureau.

Consumption of foods contaminated by pesticides and wrong food habits are the main causes for the increase in these non-communicable diseases, Dr. Ashoka Ranwala of the Bureau says.

Diabetes prevalence is mainly due to the consumption of wheat flour, he notes.

The health clinics, and Suvanari clinics for women, being held through MoH offices will help contain these diseases, he adds.
